Final Festival Concert
The works to be performed at the Festival Concert on Saturday 16th March are Cantata Misericordium by Benjamin Britten, and Mass in C minor ("the Great") by Mozart.
Mozart's stirring Mass in C minor, K427 was written as the result of a vow he made to have a new mass performed in Salzburg to celebrate his marriage to Constanze Weber. It was first performed in August 1783, a year after his marriage.
The less well-known Cantata Misericordium, Op.69 is a Latin version of the story of the Good Samaritan for tenor (the Samaritan), baritone (the Traveller), chorus, and chamber orchestra and was composed to mark the centenary of the founding of the International Red Cross. It was first performed in Geneva, Switzerland, on 15 September 1963, conducted by Ernest Ansermet, with Peter Pears and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. The text is by Patrick Wilkinson.
The performance ends our Festival for 2013 and features The Festival Chorus, the Northern Chamber Orchestra, soloists Rachel Little, Nicholas Hurndall Smith and John Lofthouse. The performance will again be conducted by the inspiring and engaging David Lawrence, and the Chorus Master for rehearsals will be our own Ian Jones.
Tickets will be available from The Brewery Arts Centre, Kendal, nearer the time - price to be confirmed.
